How is it possible to be totally honest? Do we perhaps just strive and work towards honesty throughout our lives?

Yes, it's a function of us always wanting to know the truth -e.g., it's important what other people do because we are sharing time and space with them; and as a function of self preservation we want to know if what others are doing will have effect on us. Honesty makes this process run smoothly - e.g., tell me what happened tell me what you know - if the person is honest then we form a probabilistic picture we call reality. But if the person lies then the lie is a fly in the ointment/wrench in the works and will effect people in an adverse manner. I think that people that lie simply aren't hip to the big picture. But as we age and learn the truth then honesty becomes simpler
